Making Space: Resistance, endurance, self-institution

Workshop with Gigi Argyropoulou

Staircase 4, School

This session will trace theoretical discussions on art, politics, and activism in order to develop a practical approach to strategies, tactics, and methods of cultural production appropriate for the current moment. Revising discourses on site-specific practice, urban interventions, socially-engaged work, and political mobilisations, we will examine how space is produced, controlled, or reinvented.

A critical engagement with space is proposed as a precondition for discovering alternative forms of site-related practice and self-institution throughout performance, art, and activist fields. In this context participants will examine the potential of cultural practices to constitute critical counter-hegemonic sites and publics.

In this workshop participants aim to collectively redefine the nature of interventions and rethink models and practices of organisation for emergent cultural spaces. We will seek to critically unsettle curatorial and artistic strategies and rethink potential methods of self-instituting in this current moment.
