Using social media – subversive, critical, clever

Workshop with Hans Christian Voigt

Be it the agora in the Greek polis, the coffee house of the dissidents, the enormous Democracy Wall poster mural on the occupied Tiananmen Square, the union house, the demo, #yeswecamp in Madrid or Athens: Spaces are needed for the concentration of communication and the formation of specific, autonomous publics.

Social media provide virtual spaces, which in certain circumstances can be used in subversive, critical, and playful ways. In contrast, cultural centres primarily use social media to announce and advertise their events. It is seldom that social media’s potentials are efficiently employed for political aims. On the basis of concrete examples, we will explore the potentials of public and counter-publics.
